Generally, diamonds are very much common when they range from colourless or white, yellow and brown. What makes a diamond expensive and rare is the intensity of the natural colour. The white diamonds are generally of cheaper variants due to lack of colour, hue, saturation and intensity.
Pink diamonds, on the other hand, are regarded as certified vibrant diamonds which are currently available in the market. In addition to this, pink diamonds are usually found in Australia and that is the reason why people are also regarded as Australian pink diamonds. The pink diamonds are quite expensive in the market as their price ranges from $10,000 to almost $100,000 per carat. By the looks of it, pink diamonds are around 20 times more expensive than white or colourless diamonds.
Moreover, pink diamonds majorly come from a single source in the entire world, Australia’s Argyle Mine. The reason that makes pink diamonds very rare is that they have a limited supply.
Why are pink diamonds rare when compared to other diamonds?
They are created very differently
Most of the diamonds from around the world are usually found with the help of the kimberlite pipe. When it comes to pink diamonds, they are formed from carbon and the age for millions of years inside the kimberlite pipes which are formed due to volcanoes.
The colour “pink” in pink diamond is a big mystery
Connoisseurs know the ways how the naturally obtained fancy coloured diamonds gain the colour. However, when it comes to pink diamonds the scientists believe that they get their colour from plastic deformation, a notable structural defect. Plastic deformation takes place when a pink diamond is forced towards the surface of the earth. Furthermore, their structure gets altered and later it causes deformation.
Pink diamonds are famous throughout the world’s history
Daria-i-Noor, a notable pink diamond which is also significantly cut pink diamond around the globe. Daria-i-Noor weighs around 186 carats and several kings have worn the pink diamond which is light coloured. It can be found currently in Tehran Province, Iran. A notable geologist from Canada gifted Queen Elizabeth II a brooch with a pink diamond on the day of her wedding. According to sources, the Queen has worn the brooch on several occasions even during Price Charles & Princess Diana’s wedding.
When a pink diamond is created, it is exposed to a significant amount of time, pressure and heat. Later they transform into diamond crystals which is same as the grains found in wood. Moreover, the grains are so tightly packed that they only allow the light of pink colour to penetrate and this gives the rarest shine to the diamond.
Another difference between pink coloured diamonds and other diamonds are that they possess a secondary hue. Moreover, they are described as orange-pink or purple-pink. The diamond experts suggest that this is the reason why pink diamonds do have the same lustre, colour or hue like other diamonds. Pink diamonds are generally found in faint, light, very light, fancy, fancy lights, fancy vivid, fancy intense and fancy deep colours.
